The Value & Importance of

Special Effects

In film production, the importance of using practical special effects (SFX) cannot be understated. Whether it be an indie production or a hollywood blockbuster, SFX is crucial in bringing a realistic feel to any visual project.
To understand why special effects are so important when it comes to film production, we must first answer the question: “What are special effects?”

Special effects are often confused with visual effects. Visual effects are digitally added into a production, most commonly known as “CGI” (computer generated images). Conversely, special effects are sometimes known as “practical effects” - real, tangible, on-set props, makeup, and costuming.
Special effects include simple makeup, full creature suits, prosthetic work, props and much more. Each effect is made by hand by a trained artist and, sometimes, a full team. These physical objects or prosthetics bring a more organic feel to films. While actors are usually the center of attention for the film, SFX are one of the most effective ways to give your audience the visual emotional enhancement needed to bring a more believability to the production.

That said, SFX teams often work hand in hand with the visual effects teams to bring the best of both worlds to a film. This might be one small scene in a grounded project, or a full blockbuster needing SFX from start to finish. The artist/team will work with the director to bring their vision to a physical object that can be used during production, and are an integral part of any comprehensive production team.

A41 Studios is proud to offer this vital service through Bulletproof Studios, owned by partner and special effects wizard Shawn Manchester. Shawn Manchester has a decade of professional experience in the field of production design ranging from SFX, VFX, and practical effects. In his own words: “A practical effect brings more emotion to a project than a digitally added effect. Digital effects should mainly be used for the truly impossible feats of filmmaking. Most effects requested can be done through a practical sense, and often create a more visually appealing final product.”
